August 24 (Renewables Now) – In line with its plans to introduce lower emission cars in India, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (BOM:532500) will attempt to develop vehicles that use ethanol and methanol as fuel.
Chairman RC Bhargava said so at the company’s annual general meeting on Thursday, as cited by Indian business daily Mint. In its sustainability report, published a month ago, Maruti Suzuki India said that even as the market share of electric vehicles (EVs) will be growing, a lot of internal combustion engine vehicles would still need to be manufactured to meet demand. India needs to pursue alternative technologies and fuels that can help it reduce the consumption of petrol and diesel, according to the company. Ethanol and methanol hold promise, it said, while compressed natural gas (CNG)-fueled cars are seen as a “good intermediate step”.
Maruti Suzuki India, which is one of the top car producers in the country, is already working on EV projects for the Indian market.
